Bathroom Remodeling Hints :: Pedestal Sinks

Pedestal sinks

Bathroom pedestal sinks have greatly increased in popularity. Traditionally pedestal sinks with a victorian look have been favored, and are still popular with their nostalgic and romantic good looks. These are the natural complement to a clawfoot bathtub.

More recent versions have been added. There are now porcelain bowls, or bowls of other compositions that are held up by pedestals made of wrought iron, chrome or stainless steel and other materials. Some of these even have some added shelf space

Bathroom pedestal sinks can add both real space and visual space and be a great addition especially to a small bathroom. The downside to a pedestal sink is the lack of surface space when grooming. There is little space to place grooming needs such as shaving supplies or a curling iron.

This could be remedied somewhat by the addition of a shelf above the sink that is the same material and style in keeping with the sink.

Wall mounted bathroom sinks

Wall mounted bathroom sinks are also gaining popularity. These sinks hang on the wall with no base at all. They appear to be hung suspended.

Wall mounted sinks can be found in vitreous china and combinations of various colored glass and stainless steel. There are both single and double sink versions, and even corner units. Some of these wall mounted sinks have shelves and also some have towel bars.

Some, but not all wall mounted sinks, include the faucets.

This type of sink may be better suited for a powder room that is used by guests. These have the same drawback as a pedestal sink in that there is no, or very little, surrounding surface to place things on unless you install a shelf near or above them. Where would you put shaving gear or a curling iron while you were using them?

Bathroom pedestal sinks and wall mounted sinks both have their own appeal and their drawbacks. What may seem a drawback to some is meaningless to others. Bathroom pedestal sinks and wall mounted sinks are both very distinctive pieces for a bathroom, or possibly a corner bathroom sink is just what suits your needs.
